The term "Pre-Unity" applies to Valiant comic books released
before Valiant's 18-Chapter Unity crossover event of Summer 1992.
The pre-Unity Valiant books were printed before the increased print runs of 1993-94,
before the "change in leadership" among the founding Valiant members,
before the major influence of monthly comic price guide magazines,
before "Death of Superman" events that drew attention to all comic books,
and before regular printing of "dealer incentive" or special cover deluxe editions.
These 55 books are considered the "best of the best" that Valiant produced,
for the reasons listed above, but mainly for cohesive stories with tight
continuity in the Valiant universe, and defining artwork for the company.
They represent about 3.5% of the total population of Valiant comics
printed from 1991 to 1996.
